20" x 20”
Born in 1994, jamil nasim, an Oakland-based painter, intricately captures the everyday experiences of the Transatlantic Black diaspora, adeptly navigating between expressive realism and a pared-down symbolic mode. Being raised in the American South under the family members who participated Black Arts movement, Nasim has always understood the power of art in exploring the Black identity. nasim underwent formal training in studio art and filmmaking at Johnston Community College and Wake Technical Community College, respectively. Nasim entered the film industry, taking on roles as a screenwriter and storyboard artist. This cinematic background has notably shaped Nasim's distinctive approach to storytelling in their paintings.
Nasim's work has been exhibited in prominent venues, including the De Young Museum, Marin MOCA, Good Mother Gallery, Soft Times Gallery, Bass & Reiner Gallery, Root Division, Chinese Historical Society of America Museum, and the African American Art & Culture Culture Complex. Additionally, Nasim successfully concluded the Bay Area Black Artist Studio Residency fellowship at Root Division in 2023, where they curated a solo exhibition featuring their paintings and works from fellow Black artists in the Bay Area.
"'Made You Look' invites viewers to journey into the kaleidoscope of memory. A young girl peers eagerly into a quarter machine, her curiosity illuminated by the neon hues of bouncing balls. Behind her, the supermarket aisles blur into a dreamlike haze, crafted with a delicate fusion of airbrush and oil painting techniques. Through charcoal, vinyl emulsion, casein emulsion, acrylic, dispersed pigment, and oil paint, the artist masterfully orchestrates a symphony of textures, evoking the sensory tapestry of youth. With each mark, the canvas pulsates with the tender nostalgia of a bygone era, where every trip to the store held the promise of small wonders and cherished moments of innocence."

Lady Henze
prada (2023)
Spray paint on panel
24” x 24”
"I’m calling this style “Bolts,” as they resemble bolts of lightning. So much of my process involves the push and pull of perfectionism vs. chaos, and these works have both. The lines are crisp, but they don’t follow a color pattern to the letter, nor are they measured- just eyeballed. I feel like this lends to work that looks handmade, despite some of its inherent orderliness.
Color is intrinsic to my practice, and I figure out the colorway before I ever touch the panel. It often begins with a singular color I really want to use, and then I build from there. I simply lay out the spray cans in a row and add, subtract, and rearrange as needed."

A.Mccarthy
Untitled (2023)
Color pencil, spray and latex paint on wood panel
24" x 24"
Alicia McCarthy (b. 1969, lives and works in Oakland) engages with the immediate world around her and uses a decidedly focused color palette on mixed-media panels. Sincere and intense but also playful, McCarthy transforms found wood surfaces into bursts, geometric blocks of color and woven patterns that are often emphasized by text and spray paint. These “paintings” bear a sculptural weight that is juxtaposed by their deceptively simple mark and image making. Although visually abstract, McCarthy's motifs - a weave or rainbow, for instance - are deeply personal and the works often include an indication of physical presence, such as the ring left by a coffee cup, print from a boot, or a note written by the artist.
Retail Value: $4,000
